Everyday racism in the form of verbal and physical abuse is a fact of life for Muslims in Scotland and attacks on mosques and other religious buildings are increasing, according to a new report on Islamophobia.

The survey of 447 people was produced for a cross-party group of MSPs and brought calls for sweeping reforms to tackle growing levels of hatred. Anas Sarwar, the Scottish Labour leader who chairs the group, said that the findings should “shame us all”. He said that people felt like outsiders in their own country and were scared to leave their homes for fear of verbal or physical attack.
