Distinguished scholars have accused the University of Glasgow of undermining academic freedom after senior staff apologised for the publication of an article critics claimed was antisemitic.

A 500-strong petition calling for the apology to be withdrawn has been signed by Noam Chomsky, the renowned philosopher, and George Smith, a Nobel Prize-winning chemist.

The campaigners insist criticism of Israel and its supporters cannot be conflated with antisemitism.
