The country’s crumbling parish churches will need £1billion for repairs in the next five years, the Church of England has said.

Many of its 16,000 buildings – some of them hundreds of years old – need work done but the Church has a huge deficit in its maintenance funds.

The scale of the problem was revealed by Tory MP Andrew Selous, who as the second estates commissioner speaks for the Church in the Commons.
